Fast response across Mississauga – Basement sewer backups handled before damage spreads

Canadian-based plumbing company serving Oakville and surrounding areas

✔ Sewage backing up into basement drains
✔ Main sewer line blockage causing overflow
✔ Risk of flooding and contaminated water

While Our Plumber Is On the Way - Do This Now

  1. Stop using all water. Don't run taps, don't flush toilets, don't run the washing machine or dishwasher.
  2. Keep everyone away from the contaminated water. It carries bacteria.
  3. If safe to do so, move belongings off the floor and away from the affected area.
  4. Take photos for your insurance claim. Most home insurance policies require documentation within 24 hours.
  5. Open windows for ventilation if the smell is strong.

This Is Not a Minor Clog. Here's What's Actually Happening

Sewage rising through your basement floor drain, toilet, or laundry sink means your main sewer line is blocked. The wastewater leaving your home has nowhere to go, so it's flowing back into your house at the lowest point.

Every hour you wait:

  • Contaminated water spreads further across your basement floor
  • Bacteria and pathogens become airborne
  • Drywall, flooring, and stored items absorb sewage and may need replacement
  • Insurance claims become harder to file the longer damage progresses
  • Mold growth begins within 24-48 hours

This problem will not clear itself. A blocked main sewer line requires professional equipment to diagnose and clear — drain cameras, hydro-jetters, and sewer snakes designed for main lines, not the kind you buy at Home Depot.

Sewage Backing Up Through Basement Floor Drain in Mississauga

If sewage is coming up through your basement floor drain, this is a main sewer line blockage — not a simple clog.

Wastewater backing up means pressure is building inside your pipes. If ignored, it can:

  • Flood your basement
  • Damage flooring and walls
  • Create serious health hazards

This problem will not fix itself — it will get worse.

Warning Signs — Your Main Sewer Line Is About to Back Up

Sewer backups rarely happen without warning. Here's what to watch for:

  • Water rising in the basement floor drain
  • Multiple drains slow or backing up at the same time (kitchen sink, bathroom sink, toilet)
  • Gurgling sounds from toilets when you run a sink or washing machine
  • Sewage smell in the basement or near floor drains
  • Toilet water level rising when you run a shower or dishwasher
  • Patches of unusually lush grass over your sewer line in the yard
  • If you have two or more of these signs, call us before it becomes a full backup. A diagnostic camera inspection is $149 and prevents a $5,000 emergency cleanup.

Mississauga Homeowners: Up to $9,000 in Government Rebates Available for Basement Flooding Prevention

Mississauga homeowners may be eligible for two separate basement flooding prevention rebate programs, depending on the type of work required and program eligibility.

Program 1 — City of Mississauga Basement Flooding Prevention Rebate

The City of Mississauga offers up to $7,500 for eligible basement flooding prevention measures. Eligible work may include sump pump installation, foundation drain or weeping tile pipe capping, downspout disconnection, and a storm lateral backwater valve.

Important: As of February 12, 2025, basement flooding prevention work must be pre-approved by the City before installation to qualify for the rebate. Work completed before pre-approval may not qualify. Eligible work must be completed by a qualified contractor licensed in their skilled trade profession in Ontario.

Program 2 — Peel Region Sanitary Backwater Valve Rebate

Peel Region offers a rebate of 60% of the invoiced amount, up to a maximum of $1,500, for an eligible sanitary backwater valve installed on the main sanitary sewer lateral.

Important: Before installing a sanitary backwater valve, the homeowner must apply for a building permit from the City of Mississauga. After installation, the valve must pass municipal inspection before the Peel Region rebate application is submitted.

City of Mississauga rebate:

Visit the City of Mississauga website and search “Basement Flooding Prevention Rebate.”

Peel Region rebate:

Visit the Peel Region website and search “Backwater Valve Rebate.”

17 Plumbing can install eligible flood-prevention equipment and provide contractor documentation, photos, invoices, and receipts required for the rebate process. Homeowners are responsible for confirming eligibility and submitting rebate applications directly to the City of Mississauga or Peel Region.

We Look Before We Touch. Sewer Camera Diagnostic — $149.

Most plumbers guess. We don't.

Before we snake, hydro-jet, or quote any repair, we send a waterproof high-resolution sewer camera down your line. You watch the screen with us. You see exactly where the blockage is, what's causing it, and how far down the line it sits.

This means:

  • No unnecessary work
  • No upselling on guesswork
  • Exact location of roots, cracks, collapses, or grease buildup
  • Written diagnosis you can give your insurance company

Camera diagnostic: $149. If you proceed with the repair, the $149 is applied to the total cost.

What Causes Sewer Backups in Mississauga Homes

Mississauga's older neighbourhoods — Port Credit, Mineola, Cooksville, Lakeview, Lorne Park, Clarkson, Streetsville, and parts of Applewood — have sewer laterals from the 1920s through 1970s. Cast iron drain stacks and clay sewer laterals are common. Both develop cracks at joints over decades.

Tree roots find those cracks. The roots are looking for water. Your sewer line is constantly wet. Once a root enters the pipe, it grows and expands until it blocks flow.

The most common causes we see in Mississauga:

  1. Tree root intrusion in clay sewer laterals (especially Port Credit, Mineola, Cooksville, Lakeview, and Lorne Park where housing is oldest)
  2. Aging cast iron drain stacks corroding from the inside out
  3. Heavy rainfall overwhelming the municipal storm and sanitary system (the City has documented multiple severe flooding events in 2024 alone)
  4. Grease, food waste, and "flushable" wipes accumulating in the main line
  5. Improper grading or installation from past renovations
  6. Clay soil with high water table in west Mississauga (Erin Mills, Sheridan, Churchill Meadows) requiring sump pump and backwater valve protection

If you've had two or more sewer backups in the last 5 years, the issue is structural — not a one-off. A camera inspection will show you exactly what's happening.

How We Clear Main Sewer Line Blockages in Mississauga

We don't guess. We diagnose, then clear, then verify.

Step 1 — Sewer camera inspection identifies the exact location and cause of the blockage.

Step 2 — We show you what's on the screen and quote you in writing before any work begins.

Step 3 — Professional drain snaking breaks through solid obstructions.

Step 4 — Hydro-jetting (if needed) fully cleans grease, debris, and root matter from the pipe walls.

Step 5 — Tree root removal using mechanical cutters and root-killing foam where appropriate.

Step 6 — Final camera inspection confirms the line is clear and flowing properly.

Step 7 — Written report with camera footage you can keep for insurance or future reference.

If the camera reveals structural damage — a collapsed section, a broken pipe, or a major root invasion — we discuss repair options including trenchless sewer repair (no excavation) where the conditions allow.

Sewer Backup FAQs — Mississauga

How much does sewer backup repair cost in Mississauga?

Main sewer line snaking typically runs $400-$900. If hydro-jetting or root removal is required, $900-$3,500. Backwater valve installation runs $1,800-$3,500. Sump pump installation runs $1,500-$4,000. Trenchless sewer line repair starts at $4,500. We provide a written estimate on site after the camera diagnostic ($149). No work proceeds without your written approval.

Can tree roots cause recurring sewer backups in Mississauga homes?

Yes. Tree root intrusion is the leading cause of repeat backups in Mississauga's older neighbourhoods. Port Credit, Mineola, Lorne Park, and Lakeview have the highest concentration of clay sewer laterals with mature tree canopies — the highest-risk combination. Once roots enter a pipe through a crack or joint, they continue growing back unless the source is addressed. We use mechanical root cutters and recommend hydro-jetting plus a follow-up inspection 12 months later. For severe cases, trenchless pipe lining seals the pipe and prevents future intrusion.

Do you provide same-day sewer backup service in Mississauga?

Yes. We respond 24/7 across all of Mississauga, from Port Credit and Lakeview in the south to Streetsville and Meadowvale in the north. Most calls receive on-site arrival within 45 minutes. After-hours and weekend calls are dispatched immediately — no upcharge for evenings or weekends.

Why is sewage coming up through my basement floor drain? Your main sewer line is blocked. Wastewater that cannot exit your home through the lateral is flowing back into the lowest opening — usually the basement floor drain. This is a clear sign of a main line blockage, not a fixture-level clog. Stop using all water immediately and call 647-862-1317.

Is a sewer backup covered by home insurance?

Most Ontario home insurance policies cover sewer backup damage only if you have purchased the optional sewer backup endorsement. Coverage limits vary widely. We provide a written report with camera footage and a detailed invoice that supports insurance claims. Document the damage with photos before cleanup begins.

What should I do right now if sewage is backing up?

  1. Stop using water immediately. 2) Keep everyone away from contaminated water. 3) Take photos for insurance. 4) Call 365-413-9539. We dispatch the closest available truck.
